It is now the middle of May and we are finished with school! I am so excited! Our weather has finally turned around and there is plenty of sun outside for us to soak up. My kids have finished up all their school work and we have had a fantastic year. I think we worked the hardest this year.
We switched up some of our curriculum this last year and I feel like it changed the mood in school. We used Mystery of History for history and Bible, Christian Kids Explore for science, Math U See for math, Bob Jones for English, and All About Spelling for spelling. I really feel passionate about all of these curricula choices, because I have seen such growth and joy in my kids this year. Not only did they learn a lot, but they had fun. They enjoyed school this year. This is huge for us because in past years I have heard nothing but whining when it came to school. This year my kids were excited to start school.
We school year-round with our kids, so my kids are not totally off the hook for summer. We follow the Public School schedule during the year and do school one day a week during the summer. I feel like my kids retain more if we do school at least one day a week during the summer. There is less brain fog during the first two months of school this way. Mainly, we will be working on math, spelling, and story writing this summer.
I got the opportunity during the Great Homeschool Conference to meet the creators of GeoMatters. I am excited to be incorporating their geography program into our summer school schedule. This geography program looks so fun. Not only do they have amazing workbooks for the kids to learn their states, but they also have a cookbook, so we can cook our way through every state. Since my kids are Celiac and have food allergies, I will be adapting all the recipes to be Gluten Free. I naturally love baking, so this is what I am most excited about.
What do you have planned this summer? Do you homeschool through the summer or do you love to travel? We love to travel and learn as we travel. This year we will be staying close to home, but we do have a couple camping trips planned. Our main mission this summer is to build the kids a club house! I will keep you posted as it gets built. I think it is more appropriate to call it a fortress because it is being built out of 4 X 4’s and 2 X 4’s. The kids want to be able to put hammocks in the clubhouse. My daughter is getting her own side with a slide and small climbing wall.
Is your family finshed with school? I would love to hear about your summer plans. Please feel free to leave me a comment below and tell me what you are doing this summer! Let’s share our summers with each other! Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog! I will be blogging about building a tree house, camping, and our homeschooling fun!
