Does your child struggle math? Do they enjoy it? I can say my kids thoroughly enjoy math. They are using Math U See this year and love it. We changed over from another math curriculum at the beginning of the year that was not working out too well. I settled on Math U See because it has a multi-sensory learning style. Plus, the blocks kind of look like Legos!
I wanted to make sure my kiddos had a strong math foundation. I had the boys review the Beta level and then we moved into Gamma. We have now successfully finished Gamma and are looking forward to division next year. My daughter, Izzy, loves Math U See too. This is her first year learning math and she loves it. At the beginning of the year, Izzy was so jealous of the boys that they watch a math video, she would cry because she “did not have her own math video”. I felt so bad for her that I bought her her own Math U See Primer set. She loves it! She begs me to do math with her now!
Math U See’s philosophy is hindered by a multi-sensory approach. Mr. Demme wants the student to build, write, and say the math problems. This approach has helped my daughter immensely. She knew how to count and could add and subtract numbers under 10. She struggled with understanding what the bigger numbers meant. She watches her Primer video on the computer and then we sit down and build the numbers in the lesson. I also make up extra examples to help her understand the concept. She loves learning and using the blocks. It has helped her understand the concept of the numbers over 10.
The great thing about teaching from a multi-sensory standpoint is if your child does not understand one aspect of it, you can use a secondary approach. For example, if your child does not understand how to add, you use the blocks as a strategy to learn how to add. Using three different approaches allows your child to learn differently, but still understand the concept.
